My ford explore is over heating but only sometimes I was wondering how you could find out which of the three it could be, the thermostat, hoses, or water pump?

Most likely a thermostat.

Check heater core hoses, if pump they would both be cold and no heat.

I replaced to gasget on my water pump. (1996 ford explorer 4lt) I still have water leaking out the weep hole. Do I need to replace to whole water pump?

IF ITS LEAKING FROM THE WEEP HOLE, IT'S TIME FOR A NEW PUMP

OTHER POSSIBLE OVERHEAT OPTIONS MAY BE YOUR RADIATOR IS SCALED UP INSIDE AND NEEDS TO BE PROFESSIONALLY TAKEN APART AND CLEANED, THE AUTO PARTS STORE FLUSHES JUST DON'T CUT IT WHEN IT'S BAD (OR GET A NEW ONE, KINDA GOTTA WEIGH OUT TIME, COST, AND ADVANTAGES)

I THINK YOUR RIG WAS ONE BEFORE ELECTRIC FANS, YOU HAVE A BELT DRIVEN FAN (TELL ME IF I'M WRONG) YOUR FAN CLUTCH MAY BE DEFECTIVE AND NOT ENGAGING THE FAN CORRECTLY

THEN YOU HAVE THE SQUISHY OLD RADIATOR HOSES (NOW-A-DAYS, THEY DON'T PUT ANTI-COLLAPSE SPRINGS IN ALL OF THEM) THE WATER PUMP'S SUCTION COULD BE S. UCKING THEM FLAT
