I have the vehicle listed above Sport, my boyfriend was driving on i40 and was raining really hard and splashing over the hood of my vehicle and it went into 4 low in high speeds, the 4wd light was flashing and it is not now after getting a used actuator and changed it, there was a frayed wire that was going to the transfer case and was thinking it shorted out due to the rain causing it to stay in 4 wd low, after changing the actuator you are able to only drive in 4wd low forward and in reverse, and same with driveshaft out, will not engage in 4 wd high or 2wd. When trying to shift in high or 2wd it will sometimes cause grinding noises but not all the time. Thank you in advance and any help would be really appreciated.

Hi,

The idea that you sometimes hear a grinding makes me think the actuator is trying to shift but isn't able to. Are you sure the new/used actuator is good?

Do me a favor. I need you to check if the actuator motor is getting 12v when you request it to shift.

If you look below, I highlighted the shift motor. Each of the wires highlighted can supply power to operate the motor based on request. See if either get power when you try shifting.

Also, by any chance have you checked the fluid in the transfer case to make sure it didn't get water in it and damage it?

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Hi, I will pass this along to my boyfriend when he gets back in town. He checked transferase fluid, its full and is good, since I had posted this last he had went and got another actuator with 2 sensors' going to the actuator because he said they looked like they where no good. He got that changed and says it acts like it wants to change gears better now but still not wanting to come out of 1st, but he was wondering if they was a specific way something had to be turned or if the actuator had a right way of putting back in? Thank you for your reply!

Hi,

There are three different transfer cases that may have been used on this vehicle. By chance, do you still have the original actuator? If you do, can you locate a part number on it for me?

Also, if the shift motor is flush when mounted, it should work automatically. There is a shaft it connects with that needs to be aligned, but other than that, it is straight forward. See pic 1 below.

Let me know.

The only numbers I could find was 5355 on the blue round plastic piece on it and Mexico, no stickers on it.

Hi,

I did more research and believe the part number should be 7G360. See pic 1 below.

Also, please reconfirm that the fluid was checked. I came across a technical service bulletin that indicates possible water ingestion when driving through high water. See pic 2.

Let me know. Also, contact the person that sold the motor to you and see if it is the aforementioned part number.

Take care,

Joe
