1996 Dodge Ram Repair Question

How do u check the fluid level on 96 dodge ram 1500 8-cyl. Manual trans.?
Engine light on and has hard time starting. Runs like misfiring and bogs down when step on gas and idles rough

If engine light is on, i will require the code set first, go get a scan and re post results.
