manual transmission level

1995 jetta 2.0 manual trans. what should the oil level be?
I opened the cap on the top of the case but do not see a level of lubricant

Fill it till it spills out with the correct gear type oil-

I know this is an old post, but for others reading this...

The fill / level plug is at the side of the transmission!

It is a 17mm HEX (round) plug. Remove the plug and fill till fluid
is level with base of plug hole. (see image)

The plug on the top is the "Timing" hole, used to check ignition
timing.

Adding fluid through that hole will contaminate the clutch!
