I see tiny little metal starting to come out of tire, safe to drive to get it repaired?

Don't touch those wires because they really smart when they poke you!

You can drive to the tire store to get them replaced, but they're going to want to inspect the steering and suspension systems for worn parts, and they will "read" the tire wear patterns to see what caused this. If you simply ran the tires well beyond their useful life, like I do, you've worn them down to the steel belts. More commonly if you only see those belts on the inner or the outer edge, it's an alignment issue that may or may not involve worn parts.

Tires that blow out on the highway are usually worn down to the belts like this, but being worn that far doesn't mean the tire is going to blow soon. They can last for months like that, but that doesn't mean it's safe or smart to push your luck. It simply means you don't need to sweat bullets on the drive to the tire store.
