RPM's drop and sometimes stalls

When shifting from drive to reverse in my daughters 95 Chevy Blazer, the RPM's drop and sometimes stalls.What are possible causes? RPM's drop down to about 300 when shifting from drive to reverse, about 700 when shifting from park to drive or reverse.
