Fluid level should be checked at every engine oil change. Frequency of change for transmission fluid is dependent on the type of driving conditions in which the vehicle is used. If the transmission is subjected to severe service such as: use in heavy city traffic when the outside temperature regularly reaches 90°F, use in very hilly or mountainous areas, commercial use such as taxi or delivery service, the fluid should be changed every 15,000 miles.

Otherwise, change the fluid every 100,000 miles. To check fluid at operating temperature (190°-200°F), which is obtained only after 15 miles of highway-type driving:

1. Apply parking brake and block wheels.
2. Place selector lever in park then start, but do not race, engine. Move selector lever through each range pausing three seconds in each.
3. Check fluid immediately with selector lever in park, engine running at slow idle, and vehicle on level surface. Fluid level should be at full hot mark.
