1994 Mercury Villager thermos stat

Cannot get thermos stat to sit properly on housing. Payed mechanic bent the first one. The second one he cut off the prongs on the thermos stat to get it to sit in there still didnt work. Trying a new one now, but it just wont sit in there. Its a mercury villager. The form wont let me say that
