Mercury Villager Torque Problem

I found a transmissiion control switch on the instrument panel. How does it work and what is it for?

have not seen that before. have you checked your owners manual

The switch is "E-AT". It changes the shift point of the transmission's lower gears to improve torque in hilly or snow and ice conditions. It improves low end torque at the expense of gas milage. I never use it on my Villager, but I live in a warm clmate with few hills.
