What does a wheel bearing sound like when it is going out? I have a 1994 Jeep Cherokee and I have a sound like a tambourine coming from the passenger side front when when I drive. (Kind of a metal on metal rattle, but thin metal. Hard to describe.)

COULD BE!--MIGHT ALSO BE YOUR BRAKE PADS SCUFFING AGAINST THE DISC

I KNOW YOUR SOUND--LIKE DRIVING WITH CHAINS ON YOUR RIG, BUT NOT NEARLY AS LOUD.

WHY DON'T YOU JACK THAT WHEEL UP--SPIN IT AND LISTEN FOR "ANY SOUND" IF YOU HEAR ONE LOOK FOR IT--YOU MUST REMEMBER, YOU SPINNING IT A 2 MPH, WILL PROBABLY NOT BE EXACTLY THE SAME SOUND AS AT 30 OR 40 MPH.

YOU SORTA ELIMINATED IT BEING 4x4 RELATED, LIKE A LOCKING HUB, W/ "2WD", AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE

WHILE IT'S IN THE AIR, GRAB THE TIRE AT 3 AND 9 O'CLOCK (LIKE HANGING ONTO A BIG OLE GAL, ON THE DANCE FLOOR!) PUSH ON ONE SIDE AND PULL ON THE OTHER, THEN REVERSE (SHAKING THE DARN THING)

DO THE SAME AT 6 AND 12 O'CLOCK----DO YOU FEEL ANY LOOSENESS ON THE SPINDLE--OR RATHER PLAY BETWEEN THE WHEEL/ HUB AND THE SPINDLE?

THERE SHOULD BE NO PLAY, NO MOVEMENT, WHEEL SHOULD ONLY ROTATE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WOBBLE!
