1994 Holden Barina Repair Question

Holden Barina Spark Problem
We have a holden barina 94 sb 1.4 engin and we're strugglong to nail down a few problems, we cant get it to idle, weve changed the spark plugs, the leads that goes over the spark plugs, we've drained of its old fuel as had water in it and we put fresh in it. sometimes when we get it idling if we try and give i revs it dies on its ass, firing order correct but we have no idea how to check the timing or even set it, please can you help asap

hi have just fixed one of these that was doing the exactly the same thing . it would only start with your foot flat on the accelerator & would not rev past 1500 rpm & not idle. ended up the catalic converter was blocked. the easiest way to tell is to undo the two bolts that bolt the engine pipe to the exhaust manifold & it should rev straight away. brett
