1994 Ford Escort Escort Gt shifting problem.

It seem I can't get into my first nor my second gear but I can 3, 4, 5 as well as reverse. I was thinking it was my pressure plate going out rather then my clutch. Can you please give me your opinion?

Will your car drive starting in second gear? If so then you've got internal transmission problems, i.E. Bad syncros or gear damage. A clutch/pressure plate problem will prevent engagement of any gear
