Hi, my husbands car had a knocking noise when he started up his car and when he stepped on the gas the knock got louder. He believes it could be a valve.

If it sounds like it is coming form the top of the motor it is most likely a valve tapping. It could be tapping becaused of a wiped cam, a worn timing belt or tensioner or a bad lifter.
