Chevrolet Truck Steering Problem

My back-up lights aren't working. I've looked up the issue online and found out that it might be the neutral safety switch, i've also ruled out the bulbs, i have replaced them both. I bought a "haynes" book for my truck and it said that my neutral switch is located at the bottom of my steering column near my firewall. The only problem is that my steering column doesnt have a neutral safety switch on it.... So i'm confused/ frustrated with this whole project altogether. I just want to know how to get my backup lights to work, without having to pay for a mechanic to do it. Please help me!!!!

if this is a manual it's on the trans, if it's an automatic it's on the steering column it should be about 4-5" from firewall.
