The first time it happened, there was an unpleasant loud clunking noise under the car and then when I applied the brakes, the car didn't stop...it has been running really rough even before that but the brake problem is a sudden new development...all I know for sure is my pads are not worn at all and there was no grinding/squealing leading up to the event. thanks for your help :)

So you changed the brakes yourself?Front or rear? You have disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear?
Thank you, will check on cylinder/valve situation. And @ saturntech, No I haven't yet had the brakes changed because I am not sure yet what the problem with them is, that's why I asked for your help. i just know that my pads aren't worn out yet because someone looked. And yes, I do have disc in front and drum brakes in rear....any info is much appreciated! thanks
Then i would make sure the rear wheel cylinders arent leaking and the rear brakes are properly adjusted.
