Why won't my car stay running?

I recently purchased this vehicle and it has been running just fine, i made a long trip to my home town a few days ago (800 miles) and it has been running good since ive been here, but yesterday i crunk the car and it will not stay running, when i try to keep it running by holding the gas i hear ALOT of backfire and there are sparks coming from the muffler....i have already put more gas and changed the spark plugs, but its still doing the same thing....please help???

Check the timing, backfires means the car is firing at the wrong time. also have the code(s) read and post them here.
