1992 Saturn SL2 stalls and makes a loud sound

i have a 92 saturn. it dies and makes a loud banging noise when I put it in reverse. when it does drive it shakes nd then it begins to get slower nd wont accelerate as fast as it should be. then a light pops on and says switch to D2 and when i do it goes a little faster then stops within 2-3min.

The first thing i would check is your alternator.Do you have a multimeter?

i took my alternator to be checked on two seperate occassions and they both say its working. i dont know what a multimeter is. if you tell me i can maybe go look and hopefully find out.

I always check the alternator in the car you could have a good alternator but a problem with the wires to it in the car.A multimeter is a volt ohm meter.Get one and at idle see what the voltage reading at the battery is.Most of those early saturns i have seen the 1991 1992 saturns when the shift to D2 lights come on its a charging issue.

the first place i took my car too to get the alternator checked they said that oil had been leaking down on the belt that helps out the alternator making it not charge the better as well as it should be. O rielly says the battery is charged good and the alternator is giving off power but its showing low resolution. i think thats the word he used.

where could the noise when i put it in reverse be coming from?

I have never heard the word low resolution described as to a alternators condition.Lets get a multimeter do what i asked i have worked for saturn for over 16yrs working on these cars so i know these cars well.Sounds like a charging issue.
