I have black smoke and struggling to start and stalling?

I have a 1992 mistubishi lancer GLXi and every morning and sometimes during the day it blows black smoke and starts really rough and sometimes even stalls on me but its an automatic?

There is a fault with the engine control and I would suggest starting with checking for trouble codes. some pre-OBD-II models do not trigger the Check Engine Light for some faults.
