EXTREME REAR BREAK SQUEAL WEATHER PARKED OR DRIVING

1992 Jeep Cherokee • 200,000 miles

I have a 1992 jeep cherokee xj 4.0 High output, manual transmission. My issues is with the rear drums. They are squealing like crazy when ever the brakes are applied like a high pitched whistle. When the jeep is sitting and I get someone to pump the breaks if you listen beside the rear wheels it sounds like a scraping noise when the breaks are pumped and it sounds like nails on a chockbaord. I just had shoes replaced and drums aswell. They were squealing before they were changed and after what is causing the noise?

Could be the backing plates that the shoes mount on. They need lube on the resting spots to keep from making the noise.

You need to have it open back up and investigate something is wrong inside this is the only way to find out-

COULD BE THAT THE SHOES ARE NOT "SELF ADJUSTING" THIS CAN BE MANUALLY PERFORMED AND AIN'T THAT HARD

IF YOU SELDOM DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AND IT SITS FOR DAYS, THE "SHINY" METAL INSIDE THE DRUMS AND EVEN ON THE ROTORS WILL SURFACE RUST, IT DOES WEAR OFF AS YOU DRIVE IT, AND IS MOST NOTICEABLE MAKING "RACKET" THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OR SO, WHEN YOU APPLY YOUR BRAKES, THEN IT MAY GO AWAY COMPLETELY

IF YOU WANT SOME ASSISTANCE IN ADJUSTING THE SHOES, OR ANYTHING ELSE, JUST LET US KNOW. WE AIM TO PLEASE!

I have greased the back plate already when I changed tge shoes. Could it be the springs? Ive recently done an axel seal and bearing. But it was squealing before that. My ebrake doesnt work at all if that helps

SORTA LOOK AT WHAT I TOLD THIS GUY ABOUT "PRIMARY AND SECONDARY" BEING IN THE CORRECT POSITIONS

http://www.2carpros.com/questions/2002-jeep-wrangler-rear-drum-getting-hot

I REALLY DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR REAR BRAKES LOOK LIKE---- I DO KNOW WHAT THEY DO, AND THE "BIG STUFF INVOLVED"

THIS GUY HERE, HAS A 17 VIDEO PLAYLIST---THE 1ST FEW YOU MAY WANNA SKIP.....HE DOES A DECENT JOB EXPLAINING, THE BASICS ARE EXPLAINED EVEN THOUGH YOUR PARTS MAY DIFFER IN LOOKS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSQITdaMGis&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=SPE46779CEC6715003

THE ONLY THING THAT I CAUGHT "WRONG" IN ONE OF HIS VIDEOS, IS WHEN HE EXPLAINS PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SHOES, HE MIXES UP THEIR NAMES (THE CORRECTION WOULD BE: PRIMARY IS THE SHORT ONE AND ALWAYS GOES TO THE FRONT, SECONDARY IS THE LONG ONE, ALWAYS TO THE REAR....NO MATTER WHICH SIDE OF THE VEHICLE YOU ARE ON) HE DOES HAVE THEM INSTALLED RIGHT, HE JUST HAD A DYSLEXIC MOMENT

I SORTA THINK MAYBE THIS MIGHT SPEED THINGS UP WITH YOU BEING ABLE TO SEE STUFF AND HAVE IT EXPLAINED AT THE SAME TIME

I USE YOU TUBE FOR MANY THINGS I GET LOST ON, OR WANT MORE INFORMATION

DO RETURN AND LET US KNOW IF THIS HELPED OR YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE.....BY NO MEANS, AM I TRYING TO "SLUFF YOU OFF"

WAITING FOR GOOD NEWS

MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY THAT YOU ARE TAKING FOR GRANTED?

LOOK AT THE WEAR PATTERNS ON THE LININGS, MAYBE ONE OF THE DARN SHOES ARE SLIGHTLY "TWISTED"???

MAYBE IT'S A COMBINATION OF A BEARING NOT SPINNING ON A TRUE AXIS AND THE BRAKE LININGS NOT MAKING 100% CONTACT ALL OF THE TIME WITH THE DRUMS

MAYBE THERE IS JUST SOMETHING YOU ARE TUNNEL VISIONED ON, THE VIDEOS I SENT MAY MAKE YOU "CATCH" SOMETHING YOU HAVE DISREGARDED

I TOO, HAVE "SOME" FORMAL TYPE AUTO REPAIR/ MACHINE SHOP TRAINING. I HAVE PICKED UP MOST OF WHAT I KNOW FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE. I AM PRETTY GOOD AT TROUBLESHOOTING MECHANICAL STUFF....I TRY NOT TO GET LOCKED IN ON ONE AVENUE OF APPROACH......I'VE WORN SEVERAL "DIFFERENT HATS/ HELMETS" ALONG THE WAY ...I AM NOW, BY TRADE, A PLUMBER

MOST OF MY EXPERIENCE IS "HANDS ON" W/ JEEP CJs---I REALLY GET EXCITED AIDING THEM---FEW COME ABOARD, AS THEY SELDOM BREAK AND ARE THE BEST MACHINE EVER INVENTED BY MAN!

I DO THIS MAINLY FOR THE "HELPING FACTOR", AND AS SLOW AS I AM TYPING AND PUTTING TOGETHER INFO, I COULD NEVER ATTEMPT TO MAKE A LIVING ANSWERING QUESTIONS....JUST ONE EXAMPLE BELOW, THIS GUY IS 18, WORKS FOOD SERVICE AT A HOSPITAL

http://www.2carpros.com/questions/1982-jeep-cj7-ignition-problem-spark-distributor-cap

I'M NOT DOUBTING YOUR ABILITIES, YOU MAY BE WAY MORE QUALIFIED THAN I

I WISH OUR SITE WOULD "PROMPT" ALL OF YOUR VEHICLE'S NOMENCLATURE (TO INCLUDE ENGINE SIZE) AND MAYBE A 1-10 SCALE OF PEOPLES ABILITIES AND USE OF TOOLS, SUCH AS A VOLTMETER.

WE TRY TO HELP PEOPLE WHO BARELY KNOW HOW TO PUMP GAS, ALL THE WAY THRU ROCKET SCIENTISTS.....I ATTEMPTED TO "PROMPT" OWN MY OWN (IF YOU CLICK ON MY AVATAR), JUST SO I MIGHT KNOW "WHOM I'M DEALING WITH"....INSTEAD OF APPROACHING FROM A "KINDERGARTEN LEVEL" EACH TIME I ANSWER SOMEONE......MOST OF THE TIME MY EFFORTS ARE OVERLOOKED

I JUST TRY TO HELP TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY, SLINGING OUT OPTIONS, EVEN IF THEY MIGHT SEEM STUPID. I SEE TOO MANY PEOPLE "GIVE UP".

THE COOL THING ABOUT CONTINUING TO PURSUE A SOLUTION HERE IS, OTHERS ARE READING THIS AND DO JUMP IN AND OFFER THEIR IDEAS AS WE GO.

AS IT STANDS NOW, TWO VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE GUYS (FROM THE BEGINNING) ARE GETTING AN EMAIL NOTIFICATION EACH TIME YOU, I, AND ANYONE ELSE JUMPS IN AND ANSWERS.....THEY DO RETURN AS THINGS PROGRESS OR THEY COME UP WITH NEW IDEAS!

I AM VERY HARDHEADED MYSELF, I DO ANYTHING TO NOT HAVE TO PAY SOMEONE ELSE TO DO MY FIXES.....I DO THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE ASKING FOR AN ANSWER HERE......I GRASP FOR STRAWS, UNTIL EVERY OPTION IS EXHAUSTED!

KEEP DIGGIN'---KEEP US INFORMED!
