92 Lumina 3.1 gas gauge not working

Got the car friend it did not start he said bad fuel pump replace the whole thing but gauge on dash does not work car starts up fine

Check the wiring to the gauge.

At the fuel pump connector, check the purple wire for voltage, key on. Any voltage, use a digital multimeter.
