It means pay attention to what the dash gauges are warning you about. Typically that's engine overheating, low engine oil pressure, or the charging system isn't recharging the battery. Loss of oil pressure will turn expensive very quickly. You can drive about a half hour on just the battery if the charging system fails. Overheating the engine will turn expensive quickly too.
