Cruise control will not engage and overdrive try to engage when the vechicle slows down 1991 nissan maxima

Is anything else not working correctly, such as speedometer, brake lights and Malfunction Indicator Light showing?
Did you check for trouble codes?
Does the master indicator light for cruise control show when switch is turned on?
