Hey my name is Zac and I own a manual 1991 Mazda b2600i extra cab. At the end of winter my 4x4 stopped working and the remote free wheel (RFW) button went out (The light). I've been trying to figure out what the problem for awhile now. The transfer case engages and the drive shaft spins. So i'm guess that the Front diff might be the problem out the RFW is not working anymore. Can you help? BTW (30000 on engine and transmission)

Here are the schematic for the RFW and possible causes.

SYSTEM WILL NOT OPERATE

FREEWHEELING-TO-LOCK (2WD-TO-4WD)

a) Faulty transfer case switch

b) Faulty control unit

c) Faulty lock solenoid

d) Faulty vacuum actuator

e) Vacuum leak at actuator or reservoir

f) Faulty 1-way check valve

LOCKUP-TO-FREEWHEELING (4WD-TO-2WD)

a) Faulty RFW main switch

b) Faulty transfer case switch

c) Faulty control unit

d) Faulty lock solenoid

e) Faulty vacuum actuator

f) Vacuum leak at actuator or reservoir

g) Faulty 1-way check valve

I would start with the simple basics first, check for dislodged or leaking vacuum lines at the vacuum actuator.
