1991 Ford F 150 Reduce Engine Idle Speed Only Thing Manual Disconnect Battery

How can I reduce my engine idle speed? The only thing the manual said was to disconnect the battery and the idle would automatically adjust itself after reconnecting the battery. This did NOT work.
