Timing chain

I have a 1990 toyota pickup 22r engine can you change timing chain without pulling head what do you recomend. Engine has just over 100k was at a stop light turned green when shifting from first to second approx. 15mph chain broke.

It is possible to replace the timing chain without taking the head off but not when the chain has broken.

When timing chain breaks, it is not as sinmple as replacing the chain only. Ther shoudl be other damages to the engine and a closer inspection is required.

Damage like in the head assy or crank and cam sprocket? Is there a way to tell in this state if the compresoin is ok

Usually the damage would be behind the timing cover and possibly valves.
Without the timing chain, it is not possible to test the compression. The only way to find out if the valves are damaged is to check the valve clearance. Excessive clearance means the valves are bent.
