Toyota Corolla Engine Problem

My 1990 Corolla has a hard time starting when it has been sitting in the driveway or a parking lot for several hours. The starter will crank robustly, but the engine will not turn over until the second or third try. Then the car shakes and pops violently and when I depress the gas pedal to get the car moving, nothing happens. After 15-20 seconds the car finally starts to move a little and then finally catches, lurching a bit. Then it runs with no hesitation, even though it idles really hard when at a stoplight. When it has been sitting for an hour or two, it has little or no problem starting, though the hard idle persists. Any idea what the problem could be?
