I have a 1990 Honda Civic DX 1.6 engine, 4th gear went out & I was unable to shift into that gear so only 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th gear worked & as I was driving & trying to shift from 5th to a lower gear it would not come out of %th at all. What could have caused this or what went wrong?

Is the clutch itself functioning? If the car is off and in gear, can you push the clutch in to allow it to roll? If not possible slave cylinder.

Yes the clutch works, I have had a car with a clutch that has went out & it stinks, the clutch works perfect. It's just that 4th gear went out so I couldn't put it in 4th & the after driving a little longer the stick shift just got stuck in 5th gear so I had to park it & get it toed home.

The transmission has failed due to internal faults and it has to be rebuilt/replaced to rectify.
