Are the rear ends of a 90 d 150 and a 72 150 custom interchangeable?

Im not really a truck person but my dad has 2 dodge ram pickups. He drives the 90 (3.9-V6) but the rear end is going bad. We've been searching for a replacement but we haven't had any luck. I was looking at the rear end on the 72 and i noticed that they look very similar. Will we be able to swap one for the other? If so what do we need to do?

We only recommend direct fit parts. I assure you there are differences. If the vehicle is a 4x4, you need to get the same gear ratio too. What is wrong with the differential you have? Is it a bearing issue?
