1989 Dodge Spirit Popping Front Left Wheel Turning Noticed That Cv Boot Torn

I have popping from the front left wheel when turning, noticed that the CV boot has torn away from the axle, packed the cv axle with grease and the popping stopped, do I have to replace the cv axle or can I just replace the boot?
