Car runs great with no thermostat (i.E. Stuck open) and living in Florida where it's always hot, this was fine as far as I could tell. Now living in Georgia I need heater and my mechanic installed a thermostat. This now causes the car to immediately run hot; overheat. He cannot figure out why this is happening. No sign of blown head. Oil seems fine. Low coolant light is on and so is Service Eginer Soon light. Mechanice says only code he sees has to do with the fuel pump. Also, 2 mechanics find that setting idle at "normal" place does not work, too low and shuts off. Must keep idle at higher than normal but then runs great.

I used to have an 88 celeb, my heater worked fine, without thermostat. I tried it. It could cause you to burn more gas, takes longer for engine to heat-up. You could try a cooler thermostat? You could drill a couple of small holes in the outside flange of thermostat, you will have some coolant flow even if the thermostat is closed.
