can the heater core be removed from the eng,compartment,or must it be removed from the inside,have seen conflicting advice.ty 88 Lincoln Town Car

Thank u very much,I am considering spending quite a bit of money on this car,I purchased it new in 89,and it has been driven normally,only by me,looks almost as clean inside as it ever did,and gets better gas mileage than many much smaller cars.I will watch for a relavent answer.
