My car wont drive over 35 miles per hour its and older car 1988 ford escort the rpms went to 3 then down and it sputtered. It got home but only at 35 miles an hour.

First, sorry we haven't gotten back sooner. Can you tell me if the check engine light was on? Next, does the vehicle start and run? Have you checked things like fuel pressure, the catalytic converter?
