on a 1988 chevy truck i have to keep putting oil in it but it dont leak and dont smoke at all

check your pcv system , and compression. then with a vehicle that old you may have valve seals worn out as well as maybe vavle guide wear. if you are using 1quart per thousand miles don't worry about it.
