We have a 1988 chevy celebrity. 2.5L engine. We were out today and our amps jumped to 18. At first it was like all the gauges had went out. Then the amps jumped and unless we were idle or going under 25, they stayed the same. There was a slight jerking there for a min, but it subsided. The lights would dim when you would take your foot off the gas, the dash and headlights. We have replaced the alternator twice already this year. Please help. Yes this car only has that many miles. We are the second owners, the first was an elderly lady that didn't do much driving.

I believe you are refering to the voltage. That would be a fault with the voltage regulator. Was symptoms similar before replacement of the alternator?

Yes. The only difference was the volts were going down instead.
