Yes it is a cj7 it has a new distributer, coil, plugs, wires carb, starter. It sat for 5 yrs so I replaced all of the above.I still got the same results. Sometimes it would fire first turn, other times it just doesnt want to start and when it does it starts backfiring it has even blown the muffler off. So I changed the engine still a straight 6 but newer and still the same problem. But now I hear a crackle in the distributer almost like something is shorting out but as soon as you hear that it starts up will run great for about 10 15 miles and starts acting like its starving for gas than the back firing sounds like a cannon going off

CAN YOU DO THE WORK?

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR TIMING IS OFF----MAYBE YOUR FIRING ORDER IS WRONG

DO YOU HAVE A DWELL/ TACH METER AND A PLAIN JANE TIMING LIGHT

SEE MINE--1ST PIC

FIRING ORDER IS 1-5-3-6-2-4.............SEE PIC 2......THE SEQUENCE IS CLOCKWISE

IMPORTANT!!!!---DEPENDING ON HOW YOU DROPPED THE DISTRIBUTOR IN---DETERMINES WHERE "#1" WIRE GOES ON THE DISTRIBUTOR CAPI HAVE MINE DROPPED IN "TEXT BOOK"---LIKE YOU WILL SEE IN MANUALS

I'M GONNA SEND TWO FELLERS TO HELP YOU FIND "TDC" SO YOU CAN DROP YOURS IN WITH THE ROTOR BUTTON FACING "MY #1"

YOU MAY HAVE TO REACH IN WITH A LONG SCREWDRIVER AND "TWEAK" THE OIL PUMP SLOT SO IT WILL DROP ALL THE WAY IN

PAY ATTENTION TO "THE SPIT"I ROLL MINE OVER WITH A RATCHET OR WRENCH (NORMAL DIRECTION OF TRAVEL) SEE PIC 3

---YOU NEVER "OVER SHOOT" THAT WAY----WHEN YOU GET THE SPIT----ROLL IT ON OVER TILL THE TIMING MARKS ARE ON ZERO---SEE 4TH PIC---WHITE MARK IS LINED UP ON ZERO

THIS SHOULD BE "TDC"----THE DISTRIBUTOR CAN NOW BE DROPPED IN---POINT IT WHEREVER YOU WANT #1 TO BE!

HERE'S THE FELLERS I PROMISED

PART 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a2X9mSSlQY

PART 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=FHX1yXVyIMg&NR=1

SOON AS YOU GET THIS FIGGERED OUT----I'LL RUN YOU THRU TIMING A 258---THEN GO INTO CARB TUNING

PAY ATTENTION NOW!!!

YOUR TURN.....RETURN WITH A GRIN!
