i have replaced the entire gasket group for the top of the engine..its a 5.7 holley performance engine..all new spark plugs..spark plug wires..new distributor cap with built in ingnition coil and new rotar button..it has a holley 600 cfm carb 4 barrel i have re timed this engine 3 times but still it backfires thru the carb..any words of advice?

check for a worn cam or a pushrod that has come off on the exaust side find what cylinder it is first by reomving plug wires one at a time until it stops then pull that side valvecover off. start engine and if 1 rocker arm isn't going up and down like the others then the camshaft is worn probably. or ook for a pushrod off of rocker arm or through it.
