1985 Dodge Ram Repair Question

Dodge Ram Starter Problem
I drove to work yesterday morning and everything was fine but when I left work and tried starting my truck, it made the grinding noise again. (worry) now it will only make the grinding noise and it wont engage. this is the 4th starter im on is there something beyond the starter causing a problem?

Inspect the flexplate if okay-Try shimming the starter drive pinion closer to the flexplate
