I have a 1984 Bronco 2 4x4 manual 4 speed and it will not start. I replaced the solenoid and still no changes. I looked underneath where the starter is and the red cable was loose but also melted. I think this might be the problem. I hope. I would like to try replacing the cable before buying a new starter. Just guessing but I would say it's close to 60 inches long. Could you tell me the specs on what, kind of cable and how long, I need to buy. NAPA wouldn't specify and said $27 seems a little spendy so I want to look online first.

THIS IS WHAT I FOUND AT THIS PARTS STORE

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_top-post-terminal-battery-cable-60-autocraft_6283551-p?searchTerm=battery+cable

SORTA SEEMS LONG FOR A BATTERY CABLEIT'S NOT EVEN FROM THE SOLENOID TO THE STARTER

BUT---IF AT ALL POSSIBLE

USE THE HEAVIEST WIRE, BUT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE FROM THE POSITIVE BATTERY POST TO THE SOLENOID (SHOWN IN MY LINK IS "2 GAUGE")

THE SAME GOES FOR THE NEGATIVE BATTERY POST TO THE ENGINE BLOCK......SHORT AS POSSIBLE

........YOU GUESSED IT----SAME FROM THE SOLENOID TO THE STARTER......SHORT AS POSSIBLE

I ALSO RECOMMEND THAT YOU USE "RED" FOR THE BATTERY TO SOLENOID, AND ALSO FROM THE SOLENOID TO THE STARTER

KEEP YOUR GROUNDS "BLACK"

(YES I KNOW THE TRUCK DON'T CARE WHAT COLOR YOU USE!!!!)

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD GROUND TO THE FRAME---FROM THE ENGINE

EVEN IF IT'S GONNA BE A LITTLE TROUBLE TO DO THE "COLOR THING"----LIKE FINDING THE ONE OF THE "CORRECT" CABLES AT ANOTHER STORE

................USUALLY DOING IT TAKES OUT THE "IDIOT FACTOR", WHEN YOU---OR A REAL IDIOT TRIES TO JUMP START A MODERN CAR......CROSSING THE LEADS MIGHT BECOME REALLY EXPENSIVE TO ONE OF THE VEHICLES!

........."RED AND BLACK" NORMALLY SENDS A "INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN SIGNAL" TO THE DUMBEST OF PEOPLE'S BRAIN

I'VE HAD MY SOLENOID "HANG UP" A FEW TIMES IN THE PASTRESULTING IN CONSTANT CRANKING, ----AT 1ST, YOU/ ME SEEM HELPLESS!!!!UNTIL I FOUND A WRENCH TO TAKE THE BATTERY CLAMP OFF----OR "HACKING" THE CABLE IN HALF WITH MY DULL POCKET KNIFE!!!.........NORMALLY THIS WILL OCCUR AT THE ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BAGGAGE DROP OFF, ON DECEMBER 23rd

I BOUGHT ONE OF THESE---JUST FOR THAT KINDA PROBLEM----I GOT THE "UNIVERSAL ONE"

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&pageId=partTypeList&suggestion=&actionSrc=Form&langId=-1&searchTerm=battery+switch&vehicleIdSearch=5891&searchedFrom=header

I'VE YET TO INSTALL IT BETWEEN THE BATTERY AND SOLENOID (2 SHORT CABLES)----GONNA STICK THE HANDLE THRU MY PASSENGER FLOOR BOARD.....THE CONNECTIONS WILL BE ON THE ENGINE SIDE OF THE FIREWALL

3 USES

........KILL A RUNAWAY STARTER

......KILL POWER WHEN FIXING STUFF, WITHOUT TAKING THE BATTERY LOOSE

.....THEFT DETERRENT (WHEN IN A BAD PLACE....EVEN THOUGH I WOULD LOSE MY STEREO MEMORY)

HERE'S ONE OTHER THING THAT MIGHT AID YOU.....SEE THIS LINK
