I have the running gear of a 1980 ford pinto 4 speed manuel, My shifting linkage is very loose as when I go to put it in 1st gear it maybe in reverse. So I have to be very care full at stop lights etc, I'm am an x truck driver so I do have experience with manuels but shouldnt there be a little resisence there for reverse. This shifter is a top loader. Is there a shift kit or something for repair?

The shift rail in the top of the trans may be worn out. You need to remove the top plate of the trans to remove the shifter and inspect the rail for broken parts or excessive wear. Closely look at the shifter as well.
