1975 Chevrolet Custom Deluxe Pickup Hot Wired Starter Directly Battery Tried

I have a 1975 chevrolet pickup and some hot wired the starter directly to the battery. When I tried to start it the Key had no spring to it and it immediately engaged the starter when i barely turned it I checked the igniton and it seems fine took apart the tilt column its all good, bought new starter with new silinoid . When i started it the ignition had a little better spring to it but the starter engaged when i barely turned the key again it was a little further this time. the starter stays engaged an if you try to turn it back it shuts the truck off. The second time I tried to start it again and at the end when I was shutting it down it made a terrible loud kind of grinding sound.
