1966 Ford Mustang Repair Question

I have 1966 Mustang with a 289 and am having carb problems.If I the accelerator a few times it will start but only for a few second then die.what could be my problem?
I'm not much of a mechanic but am trying to learn

the choke may not be working. it needs to be completely closed when cold and when it starts, it should be open a little bit to let the motor breathe.
