1961 Chevrolet Truck Repair Question

I had a chevy 305 engin rebuilt, put 50 miles on it and it became hard to start. found gas in the oil lots of it what could cause this
Mechanic without looking said that the fuel pump was defective

that or carb float/needle seat is leaking causing overflow.
