I have an issue with my 88 Jeep. The engine will die when coming to a stop or sharp turn while steadily braking. Its not 100% of the time, but its enough to be considered dangerous to drive. The idle is rough and jumpy, it floats between 800-1k rpm. That is better considering it was below 400 - dead when I first bought the truck.

See My Profile.I answer alot in the CJ5 and CJ7 forums. And some others too!

Is your rig carburated or do you have Throttle body injection or do you have Good ole Fuel injection to each cylinder?

I am not familiar with your rig. But my CJ manuals show your rig thru 1990. Still, I may not be able to assist. But I will try!

Computer stuff is one of my weaknesses. However I do know some about them.I keep up my family and friends' rigs. If I can!

What have you done to it/for it. Even in the recent past. Detail!

Have you screwed with IDLE ADJUSTMENTS? Or has your EVIL FRIEND. This is an important question, it might aid in getting your Jeep Right!

Respond w/ answers. Detail is better!

Idle adjustments have been messed with a bit. Its a carb engine. Some "evil friends" as you put it have suggested replacing the vaccum lines since they are pretty well worn and spotty at places. Going to try yhtat out this weekend.

Good Deal!, Not the Messing w/ it----but the Vacuum lines

Should it have been a "injected model", and you had messed w/ idle.....You would have messed up "Base Idle" (factory set, in which the ENTIRE computer system is CALIBRATED TO! If you move idle on one of those....all sensors are OUT OF WHACK, and other things happen because the computer tries to compensate.

Like I said a am not "UP" on yours, but sounds like its close to a "Late CJ 7"

This is what I want you to do, AFTER-AFTER-AFTER You get new vacuum lines on, if you had it Tweaked The Best It Could Be.....A VACUUM LEAK would prevent MAX EFFICEINCY

So this procedure will hurt nothing---on a Carburated Model Vehicle.

I saw this in a Owners Manual, for a "Toyota???" Way Back.

That Rig came w/ this "Spray paint can, looking cap"

The Manual said (basically) This was its use...........:

Rev the engine and hold it at 2500--or so RPM, (do not try to Blow It Up!)

Keeping your foot on the pedal (not withdrawing it until engine hits "0" RPM) This "THROTTLING" could be done under the hood also...using Dwell or Tach Meter [or by ear, by myself, as I do]

When you get to RPM--Put the "CAP" over the CARBURATORThis sucks the Internal Passages Clean, within the carb, using the Engines Own Vacuum. (AND IT DOES A DANG GOOD JOB TOO!!!)

REMEMBER THISWhen you do this procedure.........You "FLOOD" the Carb, Thats OK, Hold the throttle WIDE OPEN and crank on it......It will start really soon!

Always keep a towel and a fire extinguisher handy......a backfire might set the flooding on fire......smother it with the towel, if it should (not happened with me yet!).......Use the extinguisher, if the towel don't work!

When I do this on rigs, I may do it 2-3 times....using a Device that will seal the carb....Or a DRIPPING SOAKING WET TOWEL/RAG/ETC AS SEEN IN PIC BELOW......Next step is adjusting the carb.

On a CJ you must remove the Air Cleaner Retainer

WITH RPMs HIGH (not enough to blow your motor) Slap on the rag, Hold the Wet Rag Down Hard, Till Engine Dies---WHILE KEEPING THE THROTTLE OPEN (seen w/ other hand)

Adjusting the carb is not hard on a CJ, Probably similar on your rig....This link may give you good info throughout....adjusting is toward the end.....YES,....I DO TALK IN CIRCLES, I JUST TRY TO HELP YOU G.I. ......NO LEAVEY NOTHING OUT!

I do have a "CJ MANUAL" including '87-'90 Wrangler...So I sorta maybe can help more if you have problems

Now is this more and better info than your EVIL BUDDIES GIVE?

Don't forget to make me sound "ANGELIC" in "FEEDBACK"!!!

Respond.....I'm going nowhere!
