How is the battery? Low battery voltage will cause the switch to stay stuck. If the battery is ok then you will need a new ignition switch. Here is a guide to help you step by step with instructions in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

If battery is good and car does start up then the ignition switch is bad. You will need to replace the switch also known as the Start Control Unit (SCU). Once you remove the switch to release the key, SCU pin B7 must have 12 volts (30+) and SCU pin B8 must receive ground. That should unlock the switch to make it possible to release the key.

The ignition key wont turn to the off possition and is stuck in the ignition lock, it's been two weeks now, the car does not give me any error message and it drive normally withouth any problems, I resorted to remove the battery if I have to stop for long periods to prevent battery drain. Can you help please, I had all sorts of advice but nothing seems to work. The latest advice I got was the replacement of the ignition lock and that seems to be unrealistic.

I thank you in advance for your kind advice and may God bless.

If the battery is fully charged and you areunable to remove the key out, then you will need to replace the ignition switch with key and have the key programmed.

My guess will be the gear selector knob button is sticking. When you put it in park the button is still depress in causing te key to not turn fully to the zero position to remove until the button finally releases on its own a few hours later. Next time that happens check the button when you are in park. If the button is still depress in, gently pry on the button to release it. Once it releases you should be able to remove the key out now. If that is the case have te gear selector knob replaced.

Could you give more details as to what happened? The title is incomplete? Did some one force the key before putting it in park? Also is this really a 2001 S40 with 18000 miles? I ask because the S40 changed in the middle of 2004? Let me know please?
