Engine Performance problem
1978 Volvo 245 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 165000 miles
The exhaust system on this station wagon came with two (if not three) mufflers. A few days ago, I took the car in due to engine noise, anticipating that I'd have to replace one of the mufflers or a piece of tail pipe. Sure enough, the muffler under the center of the car had rusted out, but instead of replacing the muffler, the service guy simply replaced it with a piece of exhaust pipe. He said someone had put in a dual system, not realizing that was how the care came from the factory. The muffler near the rear of the car takes care of the noise, but I'm wondering if somehow the performance of the car is compromised by not having the small mulffler in place. The original design for the car required the muffler, but I don't know what damage might occur if it's been replaced by a straight piece of pipe. Is there something here I should be concerned with?
