I have a manual shift lever to the transfer case that refuses to budge. I am currently sitting in AWD, but have no ability to shift up to 4hi or 4lo. I was able to move up to true 4 wheel drive for a couple of weeks after I got the car, but even then it was an ordeal getting it to engage. I was required to hold the lever in place until it "took over" and was able to run in 4hi. 4lo was always a crap shoot. Any ideas as to what the repair would be and cost?

Thanks

Hello,

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I believe the same thing has happened to my Montero.

This sounds like a retainer clip broke or the 2wd to 4wd shift fork is worn

I have tried that at least 10 times. I have also heated the car up to 70 degrees to allow all the snow to melt off of it just in case it was froze up. Still is stuck. So I will take it apart to see what happened.

Mine had the same issue. I put the car into neutral and into drive a few times and tried moving the level and eventually it popped back into 2WD. Sometimes they are a finicky. Especially if you lock it in and the differential lights light up on the dash for the front and rear in 4WD and lock the rear diff. Took me a while to get everything back into 2WD when I did that, but it finally did.
