The cost of repair would be hard to guess unless we know the problem.
Could be a ruptured seal, bad compressor etc.
If this is a R12 equipped car, you would be better off switching to R134A, since there is a finite anount of R12 left and it is very expensive.
Take it to dealer or cooling specialist and have some dye put in system to find leak and diagnose specific problem.
