Transmission problem
1989 Toyota 4Runner 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 203564 miles

If I lock in the hubs and drive in 2high it drives okay. If I drive in 4high or 4low with the hubs unlocked it drives okay. But if I lock the hubs in 4high or 4low the front wheels don't drive, they seem to stammer. When in pavement I can hear the tires chirping. My 4Runner has a 4" lift installed but there was never any problem with 4WD before. I went about two years without putting it in 4WD. I checked the fluid in the transfer case, it is okay. Last year the bearing on the right front wheel was starting to squel, but I greased it and it was fine after that. Any suggestions that I can do in the driveway?

Hi RCracer74,

Try unlocking 1 hub and see if there is any noise or tight movement. Try each wheel and see if any difference.

Are the front and rear tires of the same size?
