1986 Toyota 4Runner 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

So I have a 86 toyota 4 runner 22re. I've put alot of work into it including rebuilding motor. I put a muffler on it and with in a month the baffles burnt out. The muffler shop says im probly running to lean and thats creating the heat. The engine its self doesn't over heat.I recently did full tune up to get rid of a little back fire sputter when its ideling didn't work, they said that problem is related to the running to lean. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Thank you for your time. Caleb

Check for a failed oxygen sensor and a clogged catalytic converter
