Camshaft Timing Marks?

I am replacing a Head Gasket on my 1.8 liter Nissan and want to make sure I remove and reinstall the Timing Chain properly. Does anyone have a diagram of the timing marks at TDC and also any info on timing chain removal? I am also looking for the firing order. Thanks in advance for your help.

Everything has to line up like below when no.1 piston is at TDC compression stroke.

This happens when the ECM coil drivers sticks on, I would try a used one to see if that helps.

Hi all.

1993 Sentra, 1.6L DOHC

The timing chain was making lots of noise so I got brave and pulled the valve cover off to try to do the upper chain (this model has upper and lower chains). Have never done a chain before, but knew that I had to keep the camshafts from moving while the chain was off.

Didn't end up replacing the upper chain because - 1) you have to take the bottom sprocket off, which doubles as the upper sprocket on the bottom chain, and I didn't want to screw anything up with the bottom chain (I'd only taken the top part of the cam cover off, not the whole thing, so I didn't have full access to bottom chain).
And 2) when I took a look - the main cause of noise was no doubt from the fact that the upper tensioner was completely worn away and had serious grooves in the metal part of the tensioner - black plasticky part was completely gone! So I just did the tensioner. But in the process I DID take the two cam sprockets off. Which could have led to out-of-timing.

Car started on first crank - but "barely." It was very weak to get going (for about 2-3 seconds). Also I'm almost certain it lacks power like it used to (granted a 1.6L is small!) In fact last night (it was a bit colder last night here in MI), it wouldn't turn over at all - cranked, but like with the first start after the repair, it was "weak" and this time didn't turn over. Had to bump start it.

So. Could it be that one of the two cams (exhaust and intake) got out of time? I have a hunch this is it, based on what I've read. I didn't break anything while I was in there. One of them moved, I tried to get it back where it was to start, but not positive. The other one I'm nearly certain is where it started.

How can I check if the car is in time? I've got a small bit of experience working on cars (i.E. Willing to get dirty and scrape the knuckles), and a good manual, so is there some sort of test or visible check I can do to see if it's in time, and more importantly, to get it back in time?

Thanks for any help. I've got much more time than money right now, so if there's any way I can do this outside of paying a shop, marvelous.

If its a GA16DE it can be a bear installing the chain, and aligning all the sprockets correctly. I've done this engine 5x the 1st one I did was a nightmare the rest was gravy.

Put no.1 cyl. On TDC compression stroke verify, its all the way up look at the crank pulley-turn it till the pointer and zero lines up-open the distributor cap, is the rotor pointing the directly to no.1 tower-if not, sorry you have to do the chain/sprockets all over

The camshafts knock pins the Int. Cam should be between 9and 8 o clock and the Exh. Cam 12 o clock.

Crank lock key at 12o clock. Make sure the center sprocket dimple marks are at 1 and 5 o clock position

Note: 1. Don't worry about silvers and gold color on the chains. Just slap it on

2. Do the bottom chain first

You need to follow the book accordingly for 1st timer BTDT.

Rotor points at number one plug wire, but cam timing marks do not line up with anything. Even at 180 out.

TIMING BELT REMOVAL

CAUTION:
- After removing timing belt, do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately because valves will hit piston heads.
- Do not bend or twist timing belt too tightly.
- Ensure timing belt, camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and belt tensioner are clean and free from oil or water.
- Before installing timing belt, confirm that No.1 cylinder is set at top dead center (T.D.C.) On compression stroke.
- Align arrow in direction of timing belt rotation.
- Adjust timing belt tension with all spark plugs removed.

1. Remove the following parts.
- Front right side splash cover
- Front right side under cover

2. Remove the following belts.
- Power steering oil pump drive belt
- Compressor drive belt
- Alternator drive belt

3. Set No. 1 cylinder at top dead center (T.D.C.) On its compression stroke.
4. Remove the water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley.

NOTE: The crankshaft pulley is accessible after removing side cover from inside R.H. Wheel house.

5. Remove right side engine mounting bracket.

NOTE: Support engine by placing a jack under oil pan. Do not place jack under oil pan drain plug.

6. Remove upper and lower dust covers. Use a torx wrench.

7. Loosen timing belt tension lock nut and rotate tension clock- wise. Then tighten tensioner lock nut.
8. Mark rotating direction mark on timing belt and Remove timing belt.

CAUTION:
After removing timing belt, do not rotate crankshaft and camshaft separately because valves will hit piston heads.

9. Remove belt tensioner and return spring.
10. Inspect the condition of belt tensioner and tensioner spring.
